Although quickly becoming a highly commercialized holiday – you can still save this day as a special one for you and your family, no matter what your religion. Since Easter is in the spring, it is a time of rebirth, and starting new. This is a good time to renew your commitment to your family to be loving and nurturing.
Easter does not have to be all about chocolate bunnies and jelly beans. You can incorporate new ideas into your old ones to help your family adjust to a less commercialized more family oriented Easter Celebration.
Coloring the Eggs
There are many ways to make eggs special without buying all of the expensive kits you see in the stores. Before dying eggs, you can use a white crayon to write on the eggs, make sure you put everyone’s name on one along with any other words or decorations you do NOT want to get dyed. Eggs can by decorated with all kinds of things – stickers, glue and glitter, rhinestones, sequins, ribbon, or anything else you can think of. You can create some incredibly beautiful eggs with very little effort.
The Easter Egg Hunt
Your kids love the Easter egg hunt, but you aren’t too thrilled about all that candy. Try filling the eggs with other small items instead of candy – stickers, coins, small jewelry and toys, washoff tattoos, anything you can find small enough to fit inside the plastic eggs. Let children trade the items they find after the hunt. You can also use the real hard-boiled colored eggs, but don’t eat them if they have stayed unrefrigerated for too long.
Happy Easter
Set up teams (if there are very young children present), or work as an individual and see who can make the most words out of the letters in “Happy Easter”. More religious families may want to use “Christ is risen”. Whichever you choose, this is a way for your family to enjoy some time together.
Charades
This is a great family get together to spend time playing games (there isn’t any football on, and there aren’t any presents to open!) Charades is always a favorite, along with the charade-like spin-offs now available to purchase. You may want to make it an Easter specific game with everything being acted out having to do with Easter.
Egg Throw
To keep it less messy, use hard boiled eggs and pair into teams. Each time the egg is thrown, you and your partner have to take a step backwards away from each other. The team who throws the egg the farthest without cracking it is the winners.
