Children's travel games where the parent can play too; doesn't that sound fabulous!

The old-fashioned family road trip is still alive and well, especially with the invention of mini-vans and SUV’s. Road trips are a great way to spend quality time with your family, they will be your captive audience for as long as it takes to get you where you are going!

It’s a great idea to take at least one long road trip every year to reconnect with your family. Once you’ve spent one to two hours of quality time, the ride begins to get a bit boring, especially on the highway. There are some great games you can play to pass the time and everyone can play together. Perhaps you remember some of these from your childhood and can now pass them on to your own children!

One of the most enduring games seems to be “Punch-Bug.” With the resurgence of the Volkswagon Beetle, there are plenty of these cars to be seen on the road now. The idea of the game is to be the first to spot a “Punch-Bug” (Volkswagon Beetle,) then, call out the color of the car and punch the person of your choice. Remember not to punch too hard or you may be paid back the next time a Punch-Bug drives by. The rule in my house is, if the “punchee” did not see the car, he gets to punch the “puncher” back twice. The same car can not be used twice unless it is spotted again on a different day. It’s not a good idea to punch the driver of the car, so you are allowed to save their punch for the next rest stop.

Another game that can be enjoyed by the whole family is the Alphabet game. The alphabet game is fairly simple, you start with the letter A. When you see a sign, license plate, or billboard which has the letter A on it, you’ve got your letter, now you have to find a B and so on. Only one person can use the letter in question, so if you see a Q on a Quakermaid sign first, it’s your Q and no one else in the car can use it. The first person to get to the letter Z is the winner! Usually it helps make the game fair if each side of the car takes a different side of the road to find their letters on.

The license plate game is also fun, and a lot less competitive. The object of this game is to simply keep a list of every different state you see a license plate from. It’s fun to see how many different states you can list before you get to your destination and if you can read that fast, it is also fun to keep track of the different slogans some states put on their license plates.

Don’t forget to wave to other people you see driving on the highway, it will put a smile on their face and yours and make the trip a lot more bearable!
