Deadline is fast approaching, and you are fresh out of ideas. It's not writer's block, as such. In fact, you could write 1,000 words on being fresh out of ideas. You just cannot settle on a subject on which to write. The following idea generators should get you writing again. They will show you how to take a general subject and explore all the possible story angles around it.
1.What news stories have caught your attention in the past month? For example, you have been following the debate on education reform with interest. Look into it further. How is it impacting your local school system? What are people in the field saying about - techers, researchers. How do people on the street feel about it.
2. What are your favorite books? Write a review, or a profile of the author. Do you have a favorite genre? Write a history of the genre or a 'how-to write a romance article.'
3. What magazines do you read regularly? What other magazines interest you? Do you have a stack of Cosmo (or GQ) or do your tastes tend towards Family Circle (or Home Handyman). What types of articles interest you most in these publications? Write an article on make-up or hairstyles, or write an article describing your latest home imporvement project.
4. What local events have held your interest? Are there any historical houses or sites you could write about? Is there a local anniversary coming up? How are the local sports teams doing? Or how about a round up of the types of team sports available in your area?
5. What makes your family unique? Explore your family history, or write up some amusing family ancedotes. If your won family geneology is not intersting enough to you, try writing a piece abiout genelology in general.
6. What travel experiences have you had? Write a guide to your favorite destination. Research your fantasy destination. Write a travel story about your hometown as a destination.
7. What activities are you in involved in? Write an article for the local paper about your club's activities, or its history.
8. Is there any that you would like to do, but have lacked the time or money for participation? For example, if you have always been fascinated by astrophotography, write a story about it.
9. Have you had any volunteer experience? Write a general article on volunteering or a feature about your specific experiences.
10. What jobs have you held? Can you come up with some humorous anecdotes from the summer you spent selling ice cream? You could write an explanation of the qualifications it takes to work in a particular field.
11. What are your strongest beliefs? Write an article in support of them, or exploring various aspects of a particular belief.
12. Think about activities that you perform regularly. These can be ordinary or unusual, such as, grocery shopping, car repairs, exercise. Write an article telling other people how to do these things. If it is an everyday kind of thing tell people how to do it better.
Now that your brain is flooded with ideas, write them down for the next time your own idea generator stalls. Remember, there are many possible angles on every subject.
