For children, the winter season can be a time of boredom and loneliness. It is often too cold to play outside and too boring to stay inside alone. Also, once the children are outside, they don’t know what to play because it is too cold and snowy to do anything. But, you can make the winter season a fun time for your children. By planning out some inside activities in advance, you can eliminate the boredom blues when a chilly day of staying inside comes along. On the same note, you can help your children have fun while outside by giving them some ideas of what to play.

INSIDE

Children tend to get very bored when they are forced to stay inside, even though they usually have tons of toys to play with. They will mope around mumbling about how they do not have anything to do. The next time this happens to you, ask your child to take out one of the wintertime activity cards from their winter box. The winter box is the box that you will make up for your child and is full of various activities that your child and you can participate in. Write each idea that you come up with for an activity on a card and put it in the box. Try and make each card look really colorful and interesting to get your child’s attention. Have your child decorate the winter box and put it away until you need it.

Some ideas for the activity cards can include going to the movies, renting a video, baking cookies and some other activities that can be done any day.

Making ice cream: Get a bowlful of fresh snow either right after is snows or put a bowl out as it is snowing. Have your child mix the snow as you add cream, vanilla extract and coloring (if desired). Place it in the freezer and then enjoy!

Snow party: Have your child invite a few friends over and have a snow party. Serve cakes shaped as snowballs, create paper snowflakes and do anything else that you can think of that has to do with snow.

Videos: The videos that you watch together should be about the winter theme. Movies such as “The Snowman” are a good choice because it will remind your child of the season and the reason they are getting such a treat.

Cocoa & cookies: This activity is pretty much self-explanatory. Have your child help you make some cocoa and bake some fresh cookies and then sit down together and enjoy.

Snuggling: Sit down with your child in front of your fireplace. If you do not have one, then just sit together by a window or the back door to see outside. Snuggle together in a large warm comforter and read or just talk. Your child will love the attention!

OUTSIDE

Here are some activities that your child can play outside.

Build an igloo or a snow fort.

Have a snowball fight.

Make snow angels.

Write in the snow with food coloring and water.

Go ice skating.

Go sledding.
